The cutting machine (1) has a magnetic pulse generator (7) which, as the cutter traverses, passes magnetic pick-ups (8) arranged at specific intervals along the cutter guide (3) coupled to a coal face conveyer (2). Each pick-up has an electronic magnetic sensor for indicating the control gap (SE) control unit(SA) between cutter and conveyer at a remote control panel. Gaps of up to 50 cm can be monitored whilst in practice 15 cm would be adequate
