An umbrella assembly (10) comprising a base (12), a pole (14) mounted on the base (12) extending upwardly and outwardly from the base (12), a carriage (1 6) slidably mounted on the pole (14), and an umbrella frame (20) including an adapter (18) releasably engagable with the carriage (16). A handle (28) is rotatably mounted on the pole (14), and a cable (136) is coupled at one end to the handle (28) and coupled at another end to the umbrella frame (20) such that by rotating the handle (28), the cable (136) is retracted and the umbrella (20) is opened, and by rotating the handle (28) in the opposite direction, the cable (136) is released, the umbrella (20) is collapsed, and the carriage (16) is slidable along the pole (14). The cable (136) is couple d to the adapter (18) such that the adapter (18) may be releasably secured to the umbrella frame (20) to allow the umbrella frame (20) to be tilted and secured in an inclined position.
