A method of forming a connection between a tube 11 and a fitting 10 comprises the steps of arranging a female threaded member 16 and a compression means 19, 20 about the tube, and inserting the tube into a tube receiving part 13 of a fitting body 12. The female threaded member is then tightened onto the tube receiving part so that a generally inwardly extending formation 24 of the female threaded member bears upon the compression means. The amount of movement of a part of the fitting is determined, which is caused to move relative to another part of the fitting upon tightening of the female threaded member. Determining the amount of relative movement may be performed optically, acoustically, mechanically, or through a combination of such methods. The method may be used for connections operating at pressures of at least 100psi, and may be used in nuclear power plants or where toxic gases or liquids are being contained, so that long term monitoring of the connection can be carried out. |
