PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a quenching method by which the unevenness of cooling capacity in the quenching treatment is avoided and also the deformation and the strain developed at the quenching time can be restrained, and to provide an apparatus therefor. SOLUTION: In the quenching apparatus for dipping a material to be treated into cooling liquid 1 in a quench-cooling vessel 2, a stirring vibration device 10 for giving the cooling liquid 1 the vibration is set. Conventionally, the rising flow of the cooling liquid 1 in the cooling vessel 2 is formed with e.g. a propeller stirring machine, and since the material W to be treated is rapidly cooled, the cooling capacities are different at the upper part and the lower part of the material to be treated, uneven quenched deformation is developed. In this new method, horizontal flow is generated in the cooling liquid 1 with the stirring vibration device 10 and difference of the cooling capacities at the upper part and lower part is eliminated and uniform quenching can be obtd.
