PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a horizontally excavating machine capable of excavating ground laterally even when an obstacle such as a pedestrian overbridge exists above the machine and improving the working efficiency. SOLUTION: A main frame 4 is fitted to a self-traveling truck 1. A vertical guide frame 7 is attached to the main frame 4 for lateral movement. An extensible frame 12 having several stages extended or contracted by an extensible device such as a hydraulic cylinder 14 and vertically moved with respect to the vertical frame 7 is projectably fitted to the upper part of the main frame 4. A cutter driving device 16 is mounted to the last stage frame 12b of the extensible frame 12.
