PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a compact lathe of high rigidity, without possibility of temperature rise due to accumulation of chips on a device. SOLUTION: This lathe is provided with an erect column 12 shaped into a substantially vertical quadratic prism having a left side face 14 and a front face 18 substantially vertical and adjacently provided, grade crossing substantially at right angles in a plan view. The side of a headstock 16 is placed to the left side face 14, while the side of a tool rest 20 is placed to the front face 18. The headstock 16 and the tool rest 20 are linearly reciprocated in a substantially horizontal direction by a headstock moving device 30 and a tool rest moving device 46, respectively, so that a workpiece 24 undergoes required machining at a machining position R.
