METHOD AND DEVICE FOR FINISHING EDGE OF SHEET MATERIAL

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To convey a sheet without damaging a surface of the sheet by holding the sheet on a conveyor while supporting one surface of the sheet on the conveyor while applying the pressure to the sheet by a fluid-pressure device. SOLUTION: A fluid-pressure device is used for holding a glass sheet 22 when it is ground or polished. The fluid-pressure device holds the glass sheet 22 by utilizing the negative pressure (vacuum) when the finishing work is executed on the glass sheet 22 by a grinding wheel, that is, a wheel 25 for polishing. The device optionally comprises a plurality of elements 32 for applying the vacuum pressure to one surface of the glass sheet 22 opposite to a belt 26. These elements 32 are formed of crossbars having openings demountably connected to couplers 38 connected to a vacuum pump (not shown in Fig.).
