Separators.-The capillary walls of a separator of porous ebonite &c. are coated with a thin film of a substance which is wetted more easily than the material of the separator, whereby the initial percolation speed of liquid through the separator is increased. The film may consist of caustic soda or potash, silicates, silica gel &c., and may be deposited by filling the pores of the separator with a solution of the substance and then evaporing the solvent, or the film may be deposited by chemical reaction. Pressure or vacuum may be used to assist the process which may be carried out in the apparatus shown in Fig. 1. The separators are carried on shelves in a vessel A which is first exhausted and then placed in communication with a vessel A' containing the solution. After a few minutes, air is admitted and compressed in the vessel A to force the solution into the separators. The solution is finally transferred back again into the vessel A<1> and the separators dried by means of an air current. The solution may consist of sodium silicate or a mixture of sodium silicate and sulphuric acid and to assist penetration the separators may first be dipped in alcohol. |
