PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To enable stable performance even if an elevating distance is made comparatively larger by providing a position regulating means for regulating the horizontal position between a rope portion wound between a hoist and a car turning pulley and a rope portion wound between the hoist and a balancing weight turning pulley. SOLUTION: A car 2 is liftably constituted along a car guide rail 7 erected in a hoistway 1, and a car pulley 12 is provided on the lower part of the car. A position regulating means 21 for regulating the horizontal position of a rope 4 is provided in the substantially middle position in the direction of height of the hoistway 1. The position regulating means 21 includes a position regulating means 21a for regulating the horizontal position of a rope portion 4a positioned between a car turning pulley 10 and a sheave of a hoist 6 and a position regulating means 21b for regulating the horizontal position of a rope portion 4b positioned between a balancing weight turning pulley 11 and the sheave of the hoist 6. Thus, in an elevator having a comparatively large elevating distance, stable performance can be obtained.
