PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To decide the layout of a building freely in which an elevator is installed by using an elevator with a high reliability whose correspondence at the trouble time is quick and miniaturizing the space required on the installation of a machine room and another elevator and also the rate occupied in the building space and the height direction. SOLUTION: In this elevator, a hoisting machine 11 is installed by providing a support member 13 on the inside on the extension of a wall 1a forming an elevating road 1 and a car 3 and balance weight 6 are elevated by a rope 9 driven by the hoisting machine 11. The balance weight 6 is arranged while shifting to the side surface side of the car 3 and also the rope fixed part 4 of the car 3 is made on the lower part of the balance weight side and further, an inspection port 16 is provided on either one of the wall 1a of the upper part of the elevating road 1 for installing the hoisting machine 11.
