PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To produce the subject new physiologically active substance capable of exhibiting inhibiting actions on cell proliferation and useful as a chemotherapeutic agent, etc. for malignant tumors by culturing a microorganism belonging to the genus Streptomyces and having the ability to produce the physiologically active substance NK34944. SOLUTION: This new physiologically active substance NK34944 (salt) is represented by the formula and is capable of exhibiting inhibiting actions on cell proliferation and expected as an anticancer substance used as a chemotherapeutic agent, etc. for malignant tumors. The new physiologically active substance is produced by culturing a microorganism belonging to the genus Streptomyces and having the ability to produce the physiologically active substance NK34944 [e.g. Streptomyces sp. NA34944 (FERM P-17442) strain] in a nutrient culture medium, producing and accumulating the physiologically active substance NK34944 in the cultured product and then collecting the resultant physiologically active substance NK34944.
