PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a biodegradable polyester by integrating a recombinant vector obtained by connecting a promoter, a polyester synthase gene and a specific operon into a plastid chromosome, transducing it into a plant and cultivating the resultant transformed plant. SOLUTION: The objective polyester which is a soft polymeric material comprising the copolymer of 3-hydroxyalkanic acid represented by the formula (R is H or a 1-4C alkyl), exhibits excellent thermostability or moldability, enables us to be processed even to strong threads or transparent supple films and shows biodegradability is obtained by means of integrating a recombinant vector obtained by connecting a promoter, a polyester synthase gene, e.g. poly-3- hydroxy-butanic acid synthase gene or the like, and an operon containing 1-100 kinds of genes different from this polyester synthase gene into a plastid chromosome to transform a plant or the like belonging to the family Solanaceae, e.g. Nicotiana tabacum L. or the like and culturing or cultivating the resultant transformed plant followed by collecting a product from the cultured cell or cultivated plant. |
