PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To select which of cloth damage reduction and washing power takes priority by providing a cloth damage reduction priority course for driving a motor in a motor driving mode with small cloth damage and a washing priority course for driving the motor in a motor drive mode with high washing power. SOLUTION: This washing machine comprises a course selection switch capable of selectively designating standard course, cloth damage reduction priority course, and washing priority course. When the cloth damage reduction priority course is designated, control circuit 22 controls a washing machine motor 15, for example, so that it is normally rotated up to 50 rpm for 0.1 sec, retained there for 0.9 sec, reduced to 0 rpm for 0.2 sec, and successively reversely rotated in the same pattern. When the washing priority course is designated, the washing machine motor 15 is normally rotated, for example, up to 150 rpm for 0.1 sec, retained there for 1.0 sec, reduced to 0 rpm for 0.2 sec, and successively reversely rotated in the same pattern.
