PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a surface protecting film not peeling from an optical member due to changes in surrounding temperature or humidity, yet easily peeling from the same when necessary without leaving any glue behind even when the water contact angle is 50 degrees or less, and retaining excellent peelability even after heat treatment such as aging. SOLUTION: A surface protecting film 1 adhesively covers, thanks to its adhesive layer 12, the surface of an optical material 2 whose water contact angle is 50 degrees or less. The adhesive layer 12 is an acrylic polymer containing 10 weight % or more of an alkyl acrylate having an alkyl group containing 12 or more cabons. An optical member consists of the optical material 2 and the surface protecting film 1 that adhesively covers the surface of the optical material 2 through the intermediary of its adhesive layer 12. The adhesiveness of the adhesive layer 12 dose not easily increase with the passage of time, but the adhesive layer 12 is easily peeled from the optical member by hand or machine without leaving any glue behind even after prolonged adhesion on a surface whose water contact angle is 50 degrees or less.
