PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing in high polymerization stability an emulsion excellent in storage stability and capable of giving coating films with high weatherability, and to obtain a polymeric emulsifier to be used in producing such an emulsion. SOLUTION: This polymeric emulsifier consists of an aqueous polymer having piperidine skeleton-contg. ultraviolet-stable group and an acid value of 0.4-7.0 meq/g with the acidic functional group in the polymer neutralized; more precisely, the aqueous polymer is composed of (A) 5-50 wt.% of piperidine skeleton- contg. ultraviolet-stable group-contg. monomer unit, (B) 3-60 wt.% of acidic functional group-contg. monomer unit, (C) 20-92 wt.% of hydrophobic monomer unit other than the unit A, and as necessary, furthermore <=50 wt.% of other monomer unit. The other objective emulsion is obtained by emulsion polymerization of a radical-polymerizable monomer in the presence of the above polymeric emulsifier.
