PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide fingerprint reader and reading method that handleability is improved in the case of being actually used, and high productivity and reduction of cost are attained. SOLUTION: This fingerprint reader is provided with a fingerprint read sensor provided with the first electrode group 12 of plural columns extended in a first direction, the second electrode group 14 of the plural columns extended in a second direction crossing the first direction through an inter-layer insulation film 13 on the first electrode group 12 and a surface protective film 15 composed of a dielectric provided on the second electrode group 14 and driving circuits 18 and 19. Thus, by respectively and successively applying a prescribed voltage to either one of the first electrode 12 and the second electrode 14, successively applying a voltage to the other and measuring capacitance between the respective electrodes 12 and 14 and a fingerprint abutted on the surface protective film 15, the change of the capacitance near the intersection of the first electrode 12 and the second electrode 14 is measured.
