PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a cutting method and a lathe capable of cutting a work material with high working efficiency with high cutting accuracy. SOLUTION: According to this cutting method for a work material 10, the work material 10 is supported by a rotary support mechanism comprising a drive vehicle 11 rotating about a substantially horizontal shaft, a support blade 12 facing upward and having a work material supporting face 12a diagonally opposed to an outer peripheral face of the drive vehicle 11, and a rotatable presser roller 13 pressing the work material 10 supported on the support blade 12 against the outer peripheral face of the drive vehicle 11. With the work material 10 being rotated by the drive vehicle 11, a cutter is abutted against an outer peripheral face of the work material 10 to cut the work material 10. The work material supporting face 12a of the support blade 12 tilts to one side with respect to a reference plane including respective rotary center shafts of the drive vehicle 11 and the work material 10, while an abutting area of the cutter is an area where a cutter acting direction plane including the abutting area of the cutter and the rotary center shaft of the work material 10 tilts to the other side with respect to the reference plane.
