PRODUCTION OF FUMARIC ACID

PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing fumaric acid containing little heavy metals and having a good hue in producing fumaric acid by isomerizing maleic acid in the presence of a compound having >=1 V standard electrode potential and a water soluble bromine-donating compound. SOLUTION: In producing fumaric acid by isomerizing maleic acid in the presence of a compound having >=1 V standard electrode potential and a water soluble bromine donating compound, a reaction apparatus of austenitic stainless steel containing 1-5 wt.% of molybudenum is used and the water soluble bromine-donating compound is used in >=0.0001 mole % but <0.1 mole % in terms of bromine.
