PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To measure accurately the strain of a cathode, regardless of fluctuation of the distance from a vertical or horizontal sensor scanning surface to a cathode vertical or horizontal center, caused by position shift of the cathode generated in each measurement and by position adjustment defect at the time of maintenance inspection of the vertical or horizontal sensor. SOLUTION: At the measuring time of the strain in the vertical direction, the position of a beam 3 is measured by vertical sensors 8, 9, 10, and thereby the position of a cathode vertical center is determined as a reference in each measurement, and the measurement of the strain in the vertical direction is executed, and the distance in the horizontal direction is corrected so that the cathode vertical centers obtained by the above method agree with cathode horizontal centers at each intersection point, at scanning intersection points between the vertical sensors 8, 9, 10 and horizontal sensors 14, 15, 16. And in this cathode continuous strain measuring method, relations between scanning moving distances of the horizontal sensors 14, 15, 16 and the cathode horizontal centers are approximated linearly, and the cathode horizontal center when the horizontal sensor 14, 15, 16 exists on optional positions is derived, to thereby measure the strain in the horizontal direction.
