PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To automatically discriminate which rank articles belong to by automatically measuring the horizontal widths, lengths, thickness, and weights of the articles such as mail. SOLUTION: This device is provided with a carrying conveyer 9 for carrying mail 1, a measuring conveyer 18, a sorting conveyer 26, a length measuring part 5 for measuring the length of the mail 1 to be carried by the conveyer 9, a horizontal width measuring part 4 for measuring the horizontal width of the mail 1 to be carried by the conveyer 9, a thickness measuring part 3 for measuring the thickness of the mail 1 to be carried by the conveyer 9, a measuring part 6 for measuring the weight of the mail 1 to be carried by the conveyer 18 and a discriminating means for discriminating a rank to which the mail 1 belongs based on the length, the horizontal width, the thickness and the measured value of the mail 1 obtained by measurement.
