PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To effectively prevent the generation of ground stains and the formation of an image on a rear face, to suitably set up thresholds for judging whether each pixel of an original belongs to an image area to be reproduced, a ground area or the other area and to effectively judge which of and image area to be reproduced, a ground area or the other area includes each pixel of a color original. SOLUTION: A ground color/threshold determination part 24 determines thresholds (HC, HM, HY) on the basis of a histogram prepared by a histogram preparation part 23. A ground color conversion/false contour correction part 25 judges which of an image area to be reproduced, a ground area or the other area includes each pixel of an original on the basis of the thresholds (HC, HM, HY) determined by the determination part 24. Processing corresponding to an area to which a certain pixel belongs is applied to the picture data of the pixel concerned.
