System comprises a video camera (11) on a mobile support (12) with its optical axis essentially horizontal at a height suitable for viewing persons moving past. A portable processing unit (13) is connected to the camera to collect and process the data after a counting period. The system has a scale arranged on the wall opposite to the camera to assist in counting. A development of the system is use of two cameras arranged opposite to each other, but connected to the same processing unit to increase the reliability of the counting process.
