PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a device and a method for evaluation which can accurately predict an event selector rate after ECC(error correction code) without actually applying the ECC. SOLUTION: Data byte errors are detected by a comparator 109, classified by interleaves, and counted by a counter 107 of an error counter 105-4. Further, once one sector is read, a comparator 115 compares the count values by the interleaves with an interleave threshold 131 to detect whether or not there is an interleave exceeding the interleave threshold 131 and the error counter 105-5 counts up the detection result. A frequency of retrial after ECC is predicted from the counted value and the total number of read sectors.
