PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a small-sized and inexpensive encoder requiring no movement of an input member for the absolute position detection of the input member in the starting of the encoder (power source input) with a slight addition of parts. SOLUTION: This rotary encoder comprises a rotating plate 3, and a first position detecting track 31 having intermittent AB slits 31 arranged at prescribed circumferential intervals over the whole circumference, a second position detecting track 32 having an analog pattern 32a having a light shielding part with width linearly changed according to position, an origin truck 33 having an origin mark 33a in the position corresponding to the switching part of the analog pattern 32a, and a reference track 32 having a constant light transmittance, provided on the rotating plate 3. The second position detecting track 32 is used in starting, whereby the absolute position of the rotating plate 3 can be detected without rotating it.
