PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a surface mounting device which can improve the workability of substrate carrying-in and carrying-out work and which can be made smaller in size and compacter in constitution. SOLUTION: A surface mounting device is provided with a substrate carrying-in path, a substrate carrying-out path, and a substrate positioning section A which positions a substrate W carried in through the substrate carrying-in path to a parts mounting position. The device carries the substrate W from a substrate carrying-in position B in the substrate positioning section A along the substrate carrying-in path, mounts parts supplied from a parts supplying device 15 on the substrate W by means of a mounting head 7 which moves in a plane above the positioning section A, and, after the parts are mounted on the substrate W, carries out the substrate W to a carrying-out position B along the substrate carrying-out path. The substrate carrying-in direction of the substrate carrying-in path is made opposite to the substrate carrying- out direction of the substrate carrying-out path. Therefore, the workability of substrate carrying-in and carrying out work can be improved, because a worker can carry out the work at the same position. In addition, the size of the surface mounting device can be reduced and the constitution of the device can be made compacter, because the constitution of the device is simplified.
