PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To save the space and to reduce the cost. SOLUTION: The polarizing element consists of a first transparent member 11 having a plurality of first and second slopes 11a, 11b formed perpendicular to each other, a polarization separation film 13 formed on the first and second slopes 11a, 11b to separate the incident light into transmitted light and reflected light having the polarization planes perpendicular to each other, a second transparent member 12 laminated on the first and second slopes 11a, 11b, and a 1/4 wavelength plate 16 and a reflector 17 both disposed in the optical path of the light reflected by the first and second slopes 11a, 11b to return in the direction to the entrance face 1a side. By this constitution, for example, the light with P-polarized light component is transmitted through the first slope 11a to exit, while the light with S-polarized light component is reflected by the first slope 11a and by the second slope 11b to propagate to the incident side. |
