PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To emphasize a contour with high definition, to obtain an excellent definition feeling in an image and to obtain a clear image by providing a contour emphasizing signal generating part for outputting a delay signal and a plurality of differential signals from an inputted video image. SOLUTION: The contour emphasizing signal generating part 7 generates the three video signals S1-S3 with different delay quantities by delay elements 1 and 2. The signals are processed by a first order differentiation circuit composed of subtracting circuits 3 and 4. Then an S4 signal is generated from an S1 signal and an S2 signal, and an S5 signal is generated from the S2 signal and an S3 signal concerning the video signals S1-S3. The S4 and S5 signals generated by a processing through the use of the subtracting circuits 3 and 4 are inputted to the subtracting circuit 5 to be processed. Then a second differential signal S6 is generated and, besides, the contour emphasizing signal S7 is generated by an adding circuit 6 by the second differential signal S6 and the S3 signal.
