PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a focal plane shutter for a camera capable of improving quality, and also attaining the reduction of a cost. SOLUTION: Two blades 3A and 3B for closing/opening an aperture 2a are supported on the shutter base plate 2 of the focal plane shutter 1 so that the blades may freely travel. Besides, blade driving levers 5A and 5B for making the blades 3A and 3B travel are freely rotatably supported on the shutter base plate 2. Linear DC motors 22A and 22B are arranged in the vicinity of the blade driving levers 5A and 5B. In the case of locking the blade driving levers 5A and 5B, each movable element 29 of the linear DC motors 22A and 22B is drawn out so as to lock the blade driving levers 5A and 5B. In the case of releasing the blade driving levers 5A and 5B from being locked, each movable element 29 of the linear DC motors 22A and 22B is drawn in.
