PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain a natural picture even in the case of photographing a moving picture by an electronic image pickup device that does not quickly responds to a change in the white balance after the white balance is once adjusted while quickly tracing a large change caused in the white balance. SOLUTION: The white balance adjustment method employs a CCD 12 that applies photoelectric conversion to an optical image being a photographing object into image information by each color component via at least 3-color filters and stores the image information to a DRAM 20, a sample-hold circuit 15, an A/D converter 16, a color process circuit 17, a DMA controller 18, a DRAM interface 19 and a CPU 21 that obtains a mean value of the image information by each color component stored in the DRAM 20, obtains a coefficient of the image information by each color component with respect to the obtained mean value of the image information by each of other color components through the use of the obtained mean value of the image information by each color component on the basis of the mean value of the image information of the color component closest to the luminance signal and calculates an adjustment value of the white balance on the basis of the obtained coefficients.
