PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To make it possible to directly detect a space loss state and facilitate adjustment operation of a magnetic head part by detecting the space loss based on the ratio of a barcode read output extracted from a card having a barcode and punched holes to a punched hole read output. SOLUTION: A card C has a barcobe (b) consisting of magnetic bars for managing the card C, and punched holes (h) indicating a standard of a balance of the card C. The card C is transported in the direction of the arrow. The barcode and punched hole reading output circuits 1, 2 detects a maximum output value when a magnetic head H is reading the barcode (b) and the punched holes (h). A comparing circuit 3 detects a space loss S by comparing the outputs of the barcode reading output circuits 1, 2 with each other. Since the ratio between the outputs from the reading output circuits 1, 2 varies as the output of the reading output circuit 1 is decreased when the space loss S increases in comparison with the zero state of the space loss S, the space loss S can be detected.
