PURPOSE: An apparatus for controlling the sound output of a sound output device is provided to mute a sound signal at the initial stage of disconnecting an earphone/headphone plug from an earphone/headphone jack and controls the volume to a minimum level, not to abruptly output a sound signal with a high level through a speaker. CONSTITUTION: An apparatus for controlling the sound output of a sound output device includes a controller(20) for controlling a volume, an encoder(21) for encoding a volume control signal generated by the controller, an amplifier(22) for amplifying an input sound signal and controlling the level of the sound signal according to the output signal of the encoder, a speaker(23) for outputting the amplified sound signal, and the mute section for blocking the amplified sound signal from being sent to the speaker. The apparatus also has an earphone/headphone jack(25) to/from which an earphone/headphone is inserted or disconnected, the first earphone/headphone switch(26) for delivering the sound signal to the earphone/headphone jack when an earphone/headphone plug is inserted to the earphone/headphone jack, and the second earphone/headphone switch(27) for controlling the mute section not to send the sound signal to the speaker when the earphone/headphone plug is inserted to the earphone/headphone jack but controlling the mute section to deliver the sound signal to the speaker when the earphone/headphone plug is disconnected from the earphone/headphone jack.
