PURPOSE: A multiplexer for an asymmetrical digital subscriber line(ADSL) is provided to disassemble asynchronous transfer mode(ATM) cells to transmit self subscriber cells to a self subscriber side, and to transmit cells of other shelfs to lower shelfs, then to multiplex cells transmitted to an upper shelf to form a synchronous transport module level-1(STM-1) frame, to transmit the multiplexed cells to an upper side, so as to make the ADSL quickly process the ATM cells. CONSTITUTION: An upper synchronous transport module level-1(STM-1) interface(302) connects with an asynchronous transfer mode(ATM) network or an upper shelf with an STM-1, to separate cells into self cells and cells for being transmitted to lower shelfs, and assembles cells for being transmitted to the upper shelf, then forms an STM-1 frame. A lower STM-1 interface(310) multiplexes the cells for being transmitted to the lower shelfs, to form an STM-1 frame, and transmits the multiplexed cells to the lower shelfs. An operation and maintenance(OAM)/usage parameter control(UPC) processor(304) analyzes the self cells received from the upper STM-1 interface(302) to process the analyzed self cells. Cell bus controllers(306,308) transmit outputs of the OAM/UPC processor(304) with a cell bus, and transmit ATM cells received from the cell bus to the OAM/UPC processor(304). A controller controls each block to perform corresponding functions, and controls a multiplexing and a demultiplexing of the ATM cells.
