<p>Methods and apparatus are provided to generate a plurality of substantially parallel, spaced scans (28) taken along a height of a data carrying graphical symbol, such as a bar code indicia (26b). The apparatus (10) includes a movably mounted linear scanner unit (20). The movably mounted scanner unit (20) may be positioned in any one of a number of spaced scanning positions in a manual fashion, or alternately an automated and controlled manner, to enable the spaced scans to be taken having a known spacial relationship. Apparatus (10) of the invention may include signal conditioning and data processing elements to digitize, store, and process the scans taken to enable the quality of a scanned data carrying graphical symbol to be evaluated. Embodiments may include a scanning head portion (12a), which houses the movably mounted scanning unit (20) and a drive unit (50), that is operatively coupled to a main unit (10C). The main unit (10C) may most preferably house items including a control module (60) or an embedded computer.</p> |
