A photocatalytic material having titanium oxide crystals and nitrogen atoms incorporated therein, which is obtainable by at least one of a method comprising substituting nitrogen atoms for some of the oxygen sites of titanium oxide crystals, a method comprising doping nitrogen atoms between lattices of a titanium oxide crystal and a method comprising doping nitrogen atoms to grain boundaries of titanium oxide, or a combination of these methods. The photocatalytic material has a chemical bonding between Ti and an N atom formed by, for example, a treatment mentioned above, which results in its exhibition of a photocatalytic activity by absorbing visible lights. For example, a photocatalytic article is prepared by forming a Ti-O-N thin film with a thickness of 10 νm or less on a substrate. A novel photocatalytic material which is capable of exhibiting a photocatalytic activity with visible lights is thus provided.
|
