The hinge comprises a hinge socket (31) in the upper region of a side wall of the scanner body (3), and a hinge pin (36). A hollow engagement part (40), arranged on the side of the lid, has a side slot (401b) through which the hinge pin can pass. The hinge socket is not connected to the internal space of the scanner body. The hinge is coincident with the side wall when the cover lies on the scanner body.
