Gear system pilot (guide) values for the engine are obtained by tests as functions of the motor torque, gear ratios and e.g., engine speed and stored in a pilot control unit as a family of performance characteristics. An automatic controller (P-.PD-, or PID controller) compares the desired and actual ratio to produce a control variable which is added to the pilot control variable to produce a final manipulated variable.
