The method involves providing a number of different tolerance ranges for a test frequency of each display mode, whereby the test frequency is at least one of a horizontal scan frequency and a vertical scan frequency, checking whether or which of the different tolerance ranges for the test frequency contains the display signals and selecting a display mode that best fits the display signals according to the checks. Independent claims are also included for an arrangement for selecting a display mode and for a display device.
