In a high frequency electromagnetic field cellulose is quickly converted into carboxymethylcelluloses (CMC) of different DS-values without detectable depolymerization of the CMC at the irradiation frequency. The process involves activation of the cellulose, and reaction between the cellulose and a carboxymethylation agent in an electromagnetic field of frequency 10-23 GHz.
