A two-way paper sheet judging device for judging a paper sheet used for, e.g., an automatic teller machine. The device comprises an insert sensor for detecting the insert of a paper money, line sensors for sampling the pattern and so forth of the paper money, and a sensor memory in which sampled data collected by means of the line sensors is stored for each line. The insert sensor is provided only at the entrance side of the device. If the paper money is moved forward (toward the entrance), the sampling is started when the insert sensor detects the passage of the paper money; if the paper money is moved reversely (toward the exit), the data sampling is started before the paper money is moved. The sampled data is read out of the sensor memory under a predetermined procedure to generate pattern image data, and the paper money is judged from the pattern image data and reference pattern data. Making the same the pattern image data collected when the paper money is moved reversely and the pattern data collected when it is moved forward, the reference pattern data is made common, thereby decreasing the memory capacity. A method for controlling the judgment of a paper sheet is also disclosed.
