A method and an apparatus for cross-flow filtration of a fluid utilizing a porous membrane (2) arranged in a housing (1) having a feed inlet (3) and a retentate outlet (4) as well as a permeate outlet (5) and a retentate inlet (6), hydrophores (17 and 19) being arranged proximate the feed inlet (3) and the retentate outlet (4), respectively, for facilitating the flow of retenta te during backwashing away and along the membrane (2), the backwashing being achieved by means of a hydrophore (21) and an on/off valve (23) and a consta nt flow pump (24) such that a positive backwashing transmembrane pressure over the membrane (2) between the permeate and the retentate side of said membran e may be maintained during a majority of the period of time in which the intermittent backwashing takes place.
