Procedure to protect computer peripheral data carrier device, CD-ROM drive, CD writer, DVD-ROM

A password is agreed between the host computer (5) and a peripheral data carrier device (3). The password is part of a Prevent-Allow-Medium-Removal command of the bus protocol. A five byte password is set up. The password is fed to the peripheral data carrier device as part of a Start-Stop-Command of the SCSI protocol. If the password given by user does not agree with the agreed password, an error is indicated to the host computer, read and write operation on the data carrier are blocked or removal or insertion is blocked.
