PURPOSE: A multiplexer and demultiplexer having a differential signal loss and an optical transmission system using the multiplexer and demultiplexer is provided to minimize a loss in an optical signal on a path having a severe transmission loss and make a loss in an optical signal on a path having a minute transmission loss larger than the loss of the optical signal on the path having the severe loss. CONSTITUTION: A multiplexer for multiplexing optical signals having different wavelengths externally transmitted includes a plurality of optical transmitting units for multiplexing the optical signals to have differential losses and transmitting the optical signals. The first optical signal inputted to the first optical transmitting means of the plurality of optical transmitting means is lost once. The n-th optical signal transmitted to the n-th optical transmitting means sequentially passes through the n-th to the first optical transmitting means to be lost n times.
