The safety belt tensioner (1) has a frame (2) containing a rotatable spindle (4) which winds up the belt. There is a locking device (5) consisting of a wheel with sawtooth-shaped teeth and a pawl, which may stop rotation in one direction. The drive motor is subject to electronic control, and drives the spindle via a system of epicyclic gearing.
