The invented process is characterized in that depending on instantaneous degree of retentate thickening, groups of membrane modules are successively uncoupled downstream the retentate, to thereby maintaining on the membrane modules an operationally suitable working pressure until the required thickening degree is achieved, and so thickened retentate is then discharged. The apparatus for making the invented process comprises groups (1, 2, 3) of membrane modules, a collecting tank (5), circulating pumps (7, 12, 15), mixers (9, 13, 16), servo-operated valves (8, 20), pressure sensors (23, 24), a flow meter (25), closing valves (11, 14, 19, 21, 22) and interconnecting pipelines.
