In the present invention there are disclosed aromatic keto-acids of the general formula I and their derivatives as well as processes for preparing pharmaceutical compositions of these compounds that can be used as inhibitors of matrix metalloproteinase, particularly gelatinase A (72 kD gelatinase) and stromelysine-1, and for treating multiplex sclerosis, rupture of atherosclerotic plates, aorta aneurysm, heart lesion, restenosis, periodontal disorders, corneal ulceration, further for treating burns, decubital ulcers, chronic wounds, cancer, arthritis, and other autoimmune or inflammatory disorders dependent on attack of tissue by leukocytes or other activated migrating cells. The symbols Ar, Y, W, Re1 to Re4 have specific meanings.
