An optical device has a first medium (18), such as a gain medium, which produces more photons that exit than enters said first medium. A second medium (20) such as an SHG crystal, converts the exit light from the first medium (18) into another wavelength of light. The optical device defines a cavity bounded by mirrors (12) and (14) and including the two mediums therebetween. An energy source provides energy to at least one of the first medium (18) and second medium (20) so that a desired light output exits the cavity. The energy source is modified in a number of different manners such that the optical device has a decreased noise output. |
