PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To sort postal items with which the recognition results of postal code numbers and addresses are obtained but of which the recognition is not in time before bar code printing to the postal items by utilizing the recognition results. SOLUTION: The images of the postal items 70 are captured by a scanner 12 and if the arrival of the recognition results in a recognition apparatus at a controller 20 is in time before the arrival of the postal items at a sensor 17a, the postal items are printed with identification bar codes (R) with a printer 14 and the recognition results with a printer 15. These postal items are then transported to classification boxes determined by the recognition results. In case the arrival described above is not in time, the postal items are printed with the R alone and are transported toward reading failure classification boxes (A-1 to C-1). If the recognition results of the postal items arrive at the controller 20 before the postal items arrive at a sensor 17b, the postal items are transported to a collection box 16a for expulsion. The R of the postal items and the recognition results are stored as a table into a memory device 21. At the time of reclassification of the postal items in the collection box 16a for expulsion, the R are read again by a bar code reader 13 and the postal items are transported to the classification boxes in accordance with the corresponding recognition results by referencing the table. |
