PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To obtain the subject mulching material producible by a simple production method and capable of sustaining flame retardant effects for a long period without scattering under a wind pressure by adding a specific substance to a bark of a broad-leaved tree and/or a coniferous tree. SOLUTION: This flame retardant mulching material is obtained by adding a gypsum to a bark of a broad-leaved tree and/or a coniferous tree. At this time, the gypsum can beα-hemihydrate gypsum and/orβ-hemihydrate gypsum formed as a by-product when producing phosphoric acid using a phosphate rock and sulfuric acid by a wet process. The gypsum in an amount of 10-70 pts.wt. based on 100 pts.wt. of the bark is preferably added thereto. The gypsum is slurried with water at the time of addition and the gypsum slurry concentration at this time is preferably 30-50% in operation.
