PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for producing a new metal complex enabling a 2,2'-bipyridine-based ligand's tris-form to be derived easily and selectively, and to obtain such a new metal complex by the above method. SOLUTION: This new metal complex, a cation complex of formula II: [MA3]2+ (M is a transition metal atom; and A is a 2,2'-bipyridine-based ligand), is obtained by reaction of a 2,2'-bipyridine-based ligand A compound with a metal halide of formula I: Mh3 (M is the same as that mentioned above; and (h) is a halogen atom); wherein it is desirable that the 2,2'-bipyridine-based ligand A has a chiral substituent and the 2,2'-bipyridine-based ligand A compound is added in multistage for the reaction.
