PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an anionic surfactant which is excellent in foaming power, detergency, and low-temperature stability and hardly irritates the human skin by selecting a sulfuric ester salt of an aliphatic alcohol alkylene oxide adduct having a specified ratio of wt, average mol.wt. to number average mol.wt. and a specified distribution constant. SOLUTION: The aliphatic alcohol alkylene oxide adduct comprises at least one compound represented by the formula: R1-(OA)k-OH, and its ratio of wt. average mol.wt. to number average mol.wt. satisfies formula I (wherein v<10) or II (wherein v>10) and its distribution constant c obtained from formula III (wherein v<12) is 2.0 or lower. In the formula of the adduct, R1 is an 8-24C aliphatic or alicyclic hydrocarbon group; A is 2C or higher alkylene; k is an interger of 0 or higher provided the mean value of k is 1-20: v is the mean number of moles of alkylene oxide added and corresponds to the mean calue of k; n00 is the number of moles of an aliphatic alcohol used for raction; and r0 is the number of moles of the aliphatic alcohol unreacted.
